        ANALYSING MAGAZINES

Here are some images which I took while analysing two different magazines aimed at teenagers in a similar age group. One of the magazines was based on books reviews while another magazine focused on games and movies advertisements. I particularly looked at the chosen layout, typography and  images.

Both magazines used different techniques due to the non-identical themes. This allowed me to identify techniques which can be used depending on the target audience and the theme. However, one of the things I found that both magazines had in common were the audience interaction pages which dominated within both magazines. The 'TOXIC' magazine included variety of different bold, eye catching fonts with bright cartoon/ movie images. Whereas the 'TBK' magazine used variety of sketched drawings, lined paper which allows the audience to treat the magazine more like a notebook. This can be supported by the interaction pages.

In conclusion, I identified different techniques used in two non identical magazines, which will help me to recognize and apply suitable techniques for my own magazine.

MAGAZINE ANALYSIS - 'TOXIC'

PRICE: £3.99

TARGET AUDIENCE: 8+ mainly for young boys interested in newest games and movies.

READER INTERACTIONS: letter pages, quizzes, puzzles, searches, mismatch.

COLOURS: eye catching, bright, colourful. Dominance of  red, blue, green and yellow.

TYPOGRAPHY:  mainly bold writing in bright colours is used as the content text is very limited. Large size text used,  mostly for the titles.  This effectively brings attention to the reader.

FRONT COVER: the cover images include Lego  and other cartoon character. This automatically draws attention to the   audience of children and cartoon/ gamers fans, as these themes match their interests. In addition, these  particular images reflect what can be found within the magazine, in which  cartoon characters from movies and games dominate throughout the magazine.

LAYOUT:  the bold use of typography over the main images underlines the themes which can be found inside the magazine. In this case one of the main focuses are super heroes for example from Lego. Furthermore, at the bottom of the front cover there is a colourful tape which demonstrates different cartoons and movies characters, which can be found throughout the magazine. The overall layout is kept quite simple but also consistent. There is a clear use of eye catching titles and limited amount of texts which are mostly kept in 'speech' like bubbles.
